I've shot a lot of
contests this year, and have learned a lot about shooting
them. I'm still pretty clueless about who a lot of the women's
competitors are however. This girl was out before the Boost
Mobile started last year, not sure who she is... but needless
to say she was ripping.

How long had it been since
Newport had a fun shaped combo swell, with clear warm water,
sunny blue skies, no wind and a mellow crowd?... It had been
a while!

Newport's
public schools start Tuesday, and NHHS surfers are already
out in the local waters practicing for surf team. And again
it looks like CDMHS won't be competiting in this year's local
surf league. There's quite a few talented surfers at CDMHS,
some of whom have progressed a lot over the last year, and
are keen to compete. For some reason however CDM's school
administration, with their vast amount of resources, can't
seem to get there act together and form a surf team. Word
is CDMHS is considering a surf class later in the school year.
Maybe the instructor that oversees such a class will see the
interest and value in a competitive surfing program, and step
up to the plate and lead it! There are other competitive sports
that kids should have the opportunity to be involved in besides
football, baseball and basketball at the high school level!

The surf last Sunday in Newport was unexpected. What was
supposed to be a day of dropping left over southern walls,
ended up being a day of solid combo swell peaks. It was one
of those days where there was swell just about everywhere
in Newport... Lower jetties, 40's, Upper Jetties, River, and
"The Point" had surf in one form or another.

Jared here has been
riding this crazy little board now for a while now. The thing
looks like a skimboard with 2 pieces of wood sticking out
of it. Built for cruising down the line, place Jared in a

it on edge and turn it into a carving machine... @

Last Thurs. morning in
Newport the sun showed up, clean water showed up, an early
morning offshore breeze showed up, lots of people showed up,
and the swell showed up... well, sort of. See the headhigh

This is a pretty cool product. It's
a "hood ornament" for your board. From little red
devils, to skulls, to flags... there's a number of different
types of figures to stick on your board. The product has taken
off with snowboarders, and Tom Viscount the creator is now
introducing it to the surf market. Check out their website

Love them, Loath them,

Chances are when Newport's Shorescrew.com
throws up a new feature on their website, some are offended,
while others are entertained. Chances are also, that every
so often those that run the site won't pay the website's bills,
and the site will get shut down. And so it has been, after
nearly a month of Shorescrew.com being down for not paying
it's bills, the good people at Transworld
Surf have stepped in and supplied the necessary funds
to fire the scandolus Newport website back up again. That's
right, they're back, again... Shorescrew.com.

Reason #401 of why this
summer sucks!

During the U.S. Open I was shooting in front of eventual
winner Julia Christain's family and friends. They were an
enthusiastic and friendly bunch, and the farther she advanced
towards the final, the more excited they got. Prior to her
final I walked over and asked them if they'd throw Julia up
on their shoulders for my camera if she won. They were game
to do it.
Julia's crew is from San Diego, where it's legal to drink
alcohol on the beach... and they brought some beers and champagne
to pop open if she won. As the end of the final neared, and
it became obvious Julia was the winner, they popped a few
celebratory beers. When the final horn blew I started over
to their towels, arriving just as the HBPD was walking up.
The police had seen the alcohol come out, and were intent
on taking action for open liquor containers on the beach.
Everyone frantically explained that their friend was now
paddling in from winning the Women's U. S. Open of Surfing...
The police however seemed pretty serious about the infraction,
and things were a little tense as they called their superiors
to see how they should handle the situation. Luckily a huge
scene was overted, and the alcohol, with the exception of
the champagne, was confiscated... and her friends and family
went on to meet her at the waters edge

We were in the middle of the Indian Ocean
heading towards the southern tip of Sumatra, hours away from
other surf charter vessels, and a good 14 hours from Padang.
A mayday call came over our ship's radio that a surf charter
to the north had a passenger on board who had sustained a
traumatic eye injury. We immediately changed coarse and headed
to meet the charter. Our ship consisted of members of the
Surfer's Medical Association, and we had a naval eye surgeon
onboard that we were hopeful could help the victim.
Late at night, in the middle of the dark
Indian Ocean, the two ships pulled along one another, and
the injured passenger was skiffed to our ship. We'd gathered
a stack of flash lights, and had cleared and padded the dining
room table, turning it into an examining table for the physician.
The injured victim had been securing his board bags with a
bungee cord earlier in the day, when one of the cords sprung
loose, snapped back, and hit him in his sunglasses. The sunglasses
shattered and imbedded numerous pieces of glass deep into
his eye.
Unfortunately there was nothing the ophthalmologist
could do for him except wash the severely injured eye out.
If she had tried to remove the glass, bleeding of the eye
might have occurred, which might have resulted in hemmorhage.
The captain of his charter was told to get him back to Padang
and on a plane to Singapore as quick as possible. As their
ship motored off, the physician shook her head. Infection
and traumatic swelling of the eye would surely ensue by the
time he got to Singapore, and the eye was sure to be a loss...
I have no idea whatever happened to the guy... (see photo
of victim above).
I'm sure a lot of you are planning surf
trips out of the country this summer. For as little as the
cost of a beer a day you can get international health insurance
that will cover you in a foreign country, and more importantly
evacuate you if adequate medical facilities are unavailable..

travel insurance, or click below for more info... because
shit happens.

During the BodyGlove contest Tim Curran told his wife
that he was going to throw the biggest air he could on his
first wave... and he did. He tossed his body and board a couple
feet over a head high wave, and landed it in the flat... at
least a 6ft freefall... A score of a perfect 10! The crowd
was in awe that he didn't break his board... or a leg. And
then in the semifinal....

Tim Curran, Semi Final, Interference
called on him, Little chance of advancing, Needs a couple
giant scores, So he starts busting airs like these... and
landing some of them!
